The Arribada Club is an after-school STEM education program that offers free classes for kids, ages 10-12, in Príncipe. We opened our small space in 2017, where we aim to introduce our students to different types of technology, as well as their environmental conservation applications.

Context:

The Club is part of the Arribada Initiative, whose goal is to increase access to and use of technology focused on species conservation through an easy-to-use design and open-source code.

As part of this mission, the Arribada Club was founded in Príncipe to work together with local conservation projects, including the sea turtle tagging program with GPS system and cameras, integrating children into the development of these technologies and into conservation projects. Our classroom has about 16 students, and our education program currently runs for two school years, with weekly classes.

Main activities developed:

  • Conducting over 770 lessons, involving over 60 classes, where approximately 250 students were reached

  • Development of 3 field trips to the nesting beaches of sea turtles
