Terrestrial Conservation Projects

EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE OF PRÍNCIPE’S BIODIVERSITY

The Islands of Príncipe and São Tomé are within the Afrotropical ecoregion, and their forests are part of the Guinean Forests of West Africa Biodiversity Hotspot. They are home to many endemic species of fauna and flora and are amongst the most important of the 75 forests in Africa in terms of their avifauna.

Most of the Islands endemic species are found within the designated Natural Parks, which are consequently considered to be amongst the 200 most important biological areas on the planet.

Our terrestrial conservation projects focus on understanding the Island's extraordinary terrestrial biodiversity and the threats that it faces, and on promoting protection initiatives together with regional authorities and local communities.
