PROTECTING THE MARINE RESOURCES OF PRÍNCIPE ISLAND

The waters surrounding Príncipe Island are an important reservoir of marine life. Most of the local population lives from these thriving waters, with fish as one of the main sources of animal protein.

Despite their importance, the marine ecosystems of Príncipe are still poorly understood from a scientific point of view. To address this, the Foundation and its collaborators are actively investigating the coastal marine biodiversity and the existing pressures on marine resources.

Our marine conservation projects focus on understanding the impacts and threats to marine ecosystems. We also concentrate on protecting vulnerable species and habitats, and on developing recovery strategies for them, in addition to income alternatives that enhance the social and economic development of local communities.
