The Community Competitions are activities that take place within the Protetuga project, integrating the population and promoting good environmental practices for the communities and, consequently, for Príncipe Island.

The actions performed aim to reinforce the protection and conservation of the marine biodiversity of the island, as well as to integrate the members of the community in dynamics that encourage them to protect the environment.

Among the practices carried out, it is valued the care with handling and drying of fish, the promotion of sustainable fishing according to the Law, the organization in order to keep the communities themselves clean and the control of pollution, and the support in the Protetuga Project’s activities.

All the coastal communities of the Island are invited to participate in the initiative, with a focus on unity and communication among these communities.

Context:

The Protetuga Project has been active on Príncipe Island since 2014 with the goal of improving the conservation status of sea turtles that visit our waters.

In order to involve the local communities in the protection and conservation of the biodiversity of the island, besides the "Community Competition", the "Community Fund" was created, derived from the collection of funds through tourist visits to Praia Grande for sea turtle watching.

The amount collected is reverted as a reward to the communities that apply the best environmental practices. As a group, the community decides where the money earned is invested - from the purchase of materials to maintenance and remodeling.

Main activities developed:

  • More than 10 communities involved

  • Creation of "Community Funds”

  • Amount collected from tourism distributed as prizes to the winning communities
