The Liqueza Téla Nón project, officially entitled “Enhancing Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Land and Natural Resource Management”, results from the identification of several threats to the terrestrial biodiversity of São Tomé and Príncipe, namely the conversion of land use and the over-exploitation of forest resources. The project therefore intends to safeguard this biodiversity and ecosystem services of global relevance through the strengthening of capacities and national frameworks for biodiversity and natural resource management, integrated territorial planning, application of the environmental legal framework and improved management of protected areas.

The implementation of the various components of the project is the responsibility of the General Directorate for the Environment, Directorate of Forests and Biodiversity, the Regional Government of Príncipe and a consortium of NGOs led by Birdlife International, within which Fundação Príncipe is an implementing partner.

Context:

Since 2006, more than half of the island of Príncipe is under the protection of the Príncipe Natural Park (PNP), however, the capacity to enforce the legislation and effectively manage the park and the natural resources it holds remains poor and insufficient. The PNP's lack of financial, material and human resources has been an obstacle to its mission since its establishment and many of the objectives outlined at the time of its creation remain unaccomplished.

The population growth of recent years, together with the unsustainable use of natural resources by a society that is still significantly dependent on them for its subsistence, constitutes a threat to the unique biodiversity that Príncipe and PNP are home to.

Main Activities:

  • Update of the PNP’s Management Plan

  • Identification and assessment of High Conservation Value (HCV) areas

  • Introduction and formalization of mechanisms and/or partnerships for the management of the PNP and HCV areas

  • Implementation of protocols for monitoring biodiversity and its threats

  • Capacity building and technical support that ensures the effective management of the PNP and conservation of biodiversity

  • Stakeholder engagement and development of strategies for community co-use and co-management of protected areas within the PNP or adjacent to it
