We are hiring a National Consultant or Group of Consultants

THE PRÍNCPE FOUNDATION IS hiring a national consultant or group of consultants to carry out the physical survey in the field of the proposed areas, and to prepare cartographic products for hcvs.

Framework

With the aim of supporting national authorities in expanding the network of terrestrial and coastal protected areas, through effective zoning and participatory land use planning and management of target areas endorsed by the Government of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Birdlife International and Fundação Principe, within the framework of the ECOFAC VI initiative, in partnership with the CE3C Research Centre of the University of Lisbon, and other non-governmental partners, with funding from the European Union, identified 25 potential High Conservation Value (HCV) areas across the Island of Príncipe.

Areas identified as High Conservation Value (HCV) are characterized by biological, ecological, social, or cultural attributes of outstanding national, regional, or global importance.

Out of the 25 identified HCVs, 17 are located outside the Príncipe Natural Park. It is therefore expected to promote the effective recognition and conservation of the 17 HCV areas, based on innovative and internationally recognized partnership models. From a legal point of view, these areas lack a specific Legal Decree or Decrees that would allow them to have integrated management mechanisms that guarantee their sustainable exploitation in order to maintain or improve the identified values.

In this regard, Fundação Príncipe, in partnership with the Directorate of the Natural Park of Príncipe and the Directorate of the Environment, intends to recruit a national consultant or group of consultants to carry out the physical survey in the field of the proposed areas, and to prepare cartographic products for each HCV, in order to enhance monitoring and control mechanisms, integrated and sustainable management of natural resources, as well as surveillance in the communities neighboring the HCVs.

PRÍNCIPE foundation

The Príncipe Foundation (PF) promotes sustainable development and biodiversity conservation through projects that support local communities and empower teams. PF's projects focus on establishing and strengthening protected areas (marine and terrestrial), increasing knowledge about the island's unique fauna and flora, promoting community livelihoods, ecotourism and environmental sustainability.

The engagement of communities is crucial to the success of our projects and they must make the most of protecting the island's biodiversity. We believe that conservation has to be done with and for the people.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, or related fields;

  • Have at least 5 years of work experience in the field of cartographic mapping (candidates who demonstrate the ability to deliver products, based on justified evidence, will be considered even if they do not have the required 5 years of experience).

  • Proven experience in providing similar services in São Tomé and Príncipe.

  • Having a Master's degree and/or specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a valuable asset.

Expected KEY outcomes:

Carry out remote surveying, using existing cartographic and physical products, collecting missing or inaccurate information on the ground, participatory verification of boundaries, and cartographic production of the boundaries of the 17 High Conservation Value Areas in Príncipe, providing at least one map for each HCA, with a minimum scale of 1:25000.
