Fundação Príncipe is looking for an experienced consultant or team of consultants to facilitate the implementation of a pilot project to identify and control invasive species with an impact on agriculture and biodiversity on the island of Príncipe.

Fundação Príncipe (FP) promotes sustainable development and biodiversity conservation through projects that strongly focus on supporting the local community and building local capacity. FP's projects focus on establishing and strengthening protected areas (marine and terrestrial), researching the unique fauna and flora of the island, promoting community livelihood, ecotourism and environmental sustainability.

Engaging communities is essential to the success of our projects and ensuring that they are the ones getting the most out of protecting the island's biodiversity. We believe that conservation has to be done with and for the people.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for an experienced consultant or team of consultants to facilitate the implementation of a pilot project to identify and control invasive species with an impact on agriculture and biodiversity on Príncipe Island, São Tomé and Príncipe.

This position will contribute to assess the impact of invasive species on biodiversity and agriculture on Príncipe Island and implement a pilot study to mitigate their impact and spread. The local NGO Fundação Príncipe will lead the implementation of this activity on Príncipe Island with the support of BirdLife International. Its responsibilities will include developing protocols for sampling and monitoring species of fauna and flora, carrying out rapid ecological assessments of invasive species, among others.

Ideally, we are looking for candidates with proven experience working in the Gulf of Guinea, with proficiency in data collection methods, including sampling techniques and ecological modelling. Skills in statistical analysis and software (e.g. R, GIS) to map invasive species distributions and assess their impacts, among other qualifications below:

  • Practical experience in fieldwork and ecological assessments, especially in the identification and monitoring of invasive plant species;

  • Master's degree or PhD in conservation social sciences, conservation biology, ecology or invasive species management, with a focus on the human dimensions of biodiversity conservation;

  • Practical experience in engaging diverse stakeholders, including local communities, NGOs, government agencies and private sector entities;

  • Extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna;

  • Fluency in Portuguese and written and spoken English;

  • Strong ability to assess the ecological impacts of invasive plant species and structure recommendations for effective management strategies.
