As part of the “Community Ideas” initiative from our Omali Vida Nón project the Praia Abade community have established the production of handmade soaps as a way of diversifying the income of fishermen and fish traders. The soaps are made from coconut oil and are 100% local with no waste.
Context:
Tourism on Príncipe has opened opportunities for new artisanal products and businesses, and we always seek to support these in ways that promote sustainable practices and good management of local resources. The sale of soap from Praia do Abade has become as an important complementary source of income for the local community.
Main activities include:
Rehabilitation of workshop space for soap production;
Training in soap production techniques;
Provision of materials;
Support with the preparation of a management model, with regular visits to aid implementation;
Establishment of partnerships with local stores;
