Príncipe is regularly visited by whales – especially humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) - who use the warm shallow waters around the island to nurture their young. To understand more about the behaviour and ecology of these magnificent animals, the Foundation has been working with high school students to record sightings from observation points around the island.

This activity takes place from July to September when the whales are most common, which conveniently coincides with the school holidays.

Main Activities include:

  • Training sessions for students on how to identify whales and record data;

  • Monitoring of observation teams in the field;

  • Collation and digitization of data;

  • Supporting participating students e.g., by providing books and other stationary for their schoolwork;
