Picão community is transforming waste in beautiful jewels
The local Association Facilita Fora Umuén is a group formed by Fundação Príncipe under the Protetuga Project to enhance the economic and social development of local communities through income alternatives aimed at sea turtles conservation.
This group of 10 women from the Picão community is transforming waste collected from the largest nesting beach on the island, namely old flip flops in beautiful jewels and plastic bags on mats.
In this way, the group organizes monthly cleanups in Praia Grande where the waste is collected, catalogued and transformed, as far as possible on the Island.
This week we counted with the support from Príncipe Island military, the Tchada Women's Association and several local and international volunteers to do the first cleanup of the season.
Together, we will make Príncipe a sanctuary for sea turtles.
