Framework

Príncipe Island, part of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a region with high terrestrial and marine biodiversity, recognised as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Its economy depends mainly on agriculture, fishing and forestry resources, with a large part of the population living in poverty, especially women and young mothers. Despite efforts to protect the marine environment, including laws against turtle hunting, there are limitations in their implementation due to a lack of resources. Plastic pollution has become a growing threat, affecting marine biodiversity and local fisheries, putting traditional livelihoods at risk. To address these challenges, this project was implemented to strengthen marine

conservation, involved the community in participatory monitoring, and promoted sustainable alternatives, focusing on actions that benefit both the environment and local populations

PRÍNCIPE foundation

The Príncipe Foundation (PF) promotes sustainable development and biodiversity conservation through projects that support local communities and empower teams. PF's projects focus on establishing and strengthening protected areas (marine and terrestrial), increasing knowledge about the island's unique fauna and flora, promoting community livelihoods, ecotourism and environmental sustainability.

The engagement of communities is crucial to the success of our projects and they must make the most of protecting the island's biodiversity. We believe that conservation has to be done with and for the people.

Expected KEY outcomes:

  • Verified financial statements versus approved budgets

  • Clear reporting of funds received, claimed, and spent

  • Independent assurance of proper use of funds

  • Recommendations to strengthen controls and compliance
