Every tourist who visits Praia Grande on Príncipe Island to observe the spawning of sea turtles or the birth of baby turtles is welcomed by a team of trained monitors who introduce them to the Kaxi Tetuga museum and to all the work done by the ProTetuga team. For each visit €15 are reverted to the Community Fund to show local communities that a living turtle is worth more than a dead one.

A dead turtle is sold only once, further reducing the number of offspring who can return to our beaches to spawn. A live turtle can be "sold" up to 5 times per season to the tourists who visit us, and for every climb to the beach we increase the chances of these populations growing. The communities of Príncipe join the community competition to receive this fund and, during the nesting season, communities with better practices, more engaged in conservation and more responsible, receive the amount collected with tourism to be implemented in the improvement of their communities. This year the winning communities were, firstly - Santo António Praia, second Praia Seca and, tied third, Nova Estrela and the community of Lapa.

These 4 communities have received the direct benefits of tourism and sea turtle conservation, while benefiting from being communities committed to protecting our natural resources.

Congratulations to all of you!
